Some people pass through your life, do their work, and move on. The impact they leave stays. R.M. was one of them.

He demanded more from us—consistently, and without apology. Not in theory, but in practice. He stretched himself just as hard. Sharp in thought and sharper in speech, he didn’t hesitate to point out where you were holding back. Comfort zones, in his view, were liabilities. He pushed, prodded, and occasionally cornered me into doing more than I thought I could.

His most enduring contribution was deceptively simple: a checklist. Not a casual one, but a structured, living system—roles, responsibilities, timelines, dependencies. Training plans, events, team development—everything traced back to it. It removed ambiguity. If you followed it with discipline, progress was inevitable.

When he moved on to a larger role, he left behind more than documents. He left a way of working. The Schaum Series on Control Systems sat on his desk like a talisman — go-to reference for troubled times and others not so. The path was already laid out; the man had shown us the way. Execution was on us.

He wasn’t easy to work with. Blunt, often indifferent to how his words landed, he made himself unpopular in places that value diplomacy over clarity. But he never diluted what needed to be said—whether in conversation or in writing. That came at a cost, but it was a cost he seemed willing to pay.

There was an intensity to how he worked—long hours, deep focus, nicotine always within reach. It wasn’t performative. It was just how he operated.

Some of my own milestones trace back directly to his influence—a SANS certification, an honorable mention in a global hacking challenge. Left to myself, I might have delayed or avoided both. He didn’t allow that.

Even now, when I’m faced with something complex, I find myself defaulting to his approach: break it down, structure it, move through it without excuses.

I still measure my work against that standard.
